American Breakdown: A Read ME Discussion In-Person
Join us for an earlier iteration of our monthly book club for a riveting discussion of Jennifer Lunden's American Breakdown: Our Ailing Nation, My Body's Revolt, and the Nineteenth-Century Woman Who Brought Me Back. A Silent Spring for the human body, Lunden's wide-ranging, genre-crossing literary mystery interweaves the author's quest to understand the source of her own condition with her telling of the story of the chronically ill 19th-century diarist Alice James.
This event is sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council as part of Read ME, a statewide summer reading experience of Mainers all reading books recommended by well-known Maine authors. This discussion will be guided by Lillian Sparks, PhD, Associate Professor of History at USM. Additionally, hawk-eyed Adult Summer Reading participants will notice that American Breakdown earns you bonus raffle tickets on your bingo sheet!
This event is free and open to the public. For questions or directions to the library, call 207-865-3307.
